OPTASY partnered with Wright State University (WSU), a public higher education institution, to modernize and consolidate its large and complex web ecosystem through an enterprise Drupal multisite migration. The project focused on migrating multiple interconnected websites from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10 while preserving extensive content libraries, user accounts, and custom functionality. Wright State University is a public research university located in Ohio, serving a diverse student population across a wide range of academic programs. The university encompasses multiple colleges, departments, and specialized units, each with distinct audiences, content needs, and branding requirements. As a large academic institution, WSU relies heavily on its digital presence to support prospective students, current students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the broader community.
Over time, WSU’s web presence had grown into a complex network of independent and interconnected sites, creating challenges around consistency, maintenance, scalability, and modernization, prompting the need for a unified, future-ready platform.

Goals & Challenges
The client needed to:
- Migrate 9 interconnected websites from Drupal 7 to a Drupal 10 multisite architecture.
- Preserve over 100,000 pages and nodes, 100,000+ files, and approximately 12,000 user accounts.
- Modernize the content editing experience using Layout Builder components.
- Maintain the existing shortcode system while developing CKEditor 5 plugins to support specific custom functionality.
- Preserve all custom views, modules, and external API integrations.
- Implement proper configuration management for a complex multisite environment.
Key challenges included:
- Managing enterprise-scale data volumes without performance degradation.
- Designing complex multisite configuration splits for shared and site-specific settings.
- Ensuring shortcode functionality remained operational during the transition, while certain legacy customizations remained on CKEditor 4.
- Preserving complex content relationships and custom field structures.
- Updating external API integrations to ensure Drupal 10 compatibility.
- Overcoming memory and processing constraints during large-scale migrations.
Solutions

- Rebuilt the multisite architecture using Drupal 10 with robust configuration split strategies.
- Developed 50+ custom migration plugins and scripts to handle complex data transformations and cross-site content relationships.
